Listening skills are the bedrock of coaching. Initially, you’ll be listening for the client’s brilliance—who they are and who they need to become to step into their destiny. From this brilliance, goals will emerge. Once goals are established, you’ll begin to listen for other elements, such as the strengths and competencies the client has, as well as the blocks or self-defeating behaviors that are preventing them from moving forward. Consider this ABCDE template to help you hone your listening skills. A= Attention; B = Beliefs; C = Competencies; D = Doing; E = Energy. As you listen for the A = Attention, consider, What is drawing the attention of the client? Is it something that is in line with the stated goals or something that’s distracting them from their goals? Tune in next week for B = Belief Systems!
